The world would be a better place without you. I can never remember something of that kind being said to me. A statement of that kind really hurts. It hurts more if someone whom you love a lot says that. And a statement of that kind made Megan to part away from her life. She believed in something that was virtual and fake.

WHO WERE THE PEOPLE CONCERNED?

Megan Meier: The teenage girl who committed suicide.
Tina Meier: Megan’s mother.
Ron: Megan’s father.
Sarah Drew: Megan’s friend.
Lori Drew: Sarah’s mother.
Josh Evans: A fake character allegedly created by the Drews.
Ashley Grills: Employee at the Drews

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

As far as the reports say, the incident started to take shape when Megan Meier was in the 3rd Grade. She was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and Depression. Since then she was under regular medications prescribed by a psychologist. Then when she was in the 4th Grade, she became friends with Sarah Drew, as both of the families lived just four doors away. They were good friends and Megan was a part of some of the family outings and vacations of the Drew family. The Drew family was very much aware of the mental problems of Megan and it was Lori Drew, Sarah’s mother who gave all the medications to Megan when she accompanied them in the family outings. Gradually a lot of changes started to happen as both the kids grew.

Megan also suffered from lack of self-esteem and had body-image problems. She always considered her to be fat in comparison to the other girls. Mostly this happened because she used to get bullied by the boys of her class, who would stand at her back and would call her fat. For some time Megan had even stopped eating the lunch. And in 2005, a year before her death, Megan got so depressed that she had carved some marks into her wrist. Some teenage issues started to creep into the friendship of the girls and Megan parted away from Sarah.

In her 8th Grade Megan was taken away from the public school where she was studying and was put into a private catholic school. Tina had alleged that this move was not favored by Drew. But moving her from the school, made Megan happier and her performance also improved. During this time Megan was allowed to open a MySpace account and remain in contact with her friends. She was allowed to do that under the supervision of her parents and they kept the password of that account.

It was then in sometime in the August of 2006 when the main events culminating in the death of Megan occurred. During the time she was using her MySpace account, she met with a boy named Josh Evans. He said that he was 16 years old and he started to build up friendship with Megan. He said that he like her and his profile photo showed that he was very cute. He said that he was born in Florida and has recently moved in the nearby community of O’Fallon. He also said that he was home schooled and he did not have a phone number yet to give it to her. The relationship went stronger and all the praises that Megan received were a shot in arm for a girl who was suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder. She remained ecstatic and elated in those days. Everything went fine.

It was sometime in the mid of October that things turned in a different way. In mid-October Megan gets message from Josh: “I don’t know if I want to be friends with you anymore because I’ve heard that you are not very nice to your friends.” This was something like one of the most saddening things in her life. The next day she was on the computer and received some more messages and they all made her sad. That day her mother, Tina Meier had an appointment with an orthodontist and so she went there with another of her daughter. Then, Megan called her mother, saying electronic bulletins were being posted about her, saying things like, “Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat.” After returning, she found her daughter to be on the computer. She got angry on her and then asked her to log off. Megan’s mother, who monitored her daughter’s online communications, returned home and said she was shocked at the vulgar language her own daughter was sending. She told her daughter how upset she was about it. During this time she was crying and after that she went to her room. Her father, Ron tried to tell her that everything is going to be fine. Twenty minutes later she was found dead in her room. He was rushed to the hospital where despite the bystander CPR she died a day after. The last message that Megan received was something like “Everybody in O’Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you.”

Then things in the neighborhood did not end at that moment. At the funeral of Megan some of the community members shared the thought that she had problems and she had attempted doing suicide before. Then a report was made to the counselor’s office six weeks after Megan died by another parent. He got knowledge of the MySpace profile of Josh from his daughter who too had accesses to the profile of Josh. He reported that the profile of Josh was fake and imaginary. Later investigations revealed that it was Lori Drew who made the account of Josh Evans. She said to the investigators that the account was made because wanted to gain confidence of Megan. This she intended because she wanted to know the things that Megan said about her daughter online. She said that it was she, her daughter and another person named Ashley Grills whom they employed at that time monitored and maintained the MySpace account and sent the messages to Megan.

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE INCIDENT: Before discussing the fault if someone had let us throw some light on the real problems that were there in the incident.

1. BULLYING: this is something that we all may have faced in some part of time. Bullying in the workplace or even in the school is referred to as peer abuse. We can say that it is intentionally causing harm to others by any means like verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation. The effects of bullying are very serious and even at times fatal. They may cause a lot of damage to the victim. But the damage that it causes most is mental. Post traumatic stress disorder, aggression, psychological trauma, and various other disorders get manifested due to bullying. And eventually they may cause depression.

Role this played in the case: Megan was a victim of bullying. She was suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder and also depression. The combination of the two is indeed dangerous. A person with ADD and depression has lesser capacity of bearing adverse situations. The bullying that she received also made her to stop her launch for some time. Well this may not be a big factor
